The Role

This role is available to those within a commutable distance of the Cardiff or London Offices. You must be prepared to travel to our various sites when necessary.

The Starling Legal function supports all areas of the bank and deals with or manages all legal matters, including retail and business banking, contracts, property, IP, data protection/privacy, and disputes. For this role, you will be part of the Digital, Data & Commercial Contracts Legal team and will report to the Managing Counsel who heads up this team.

The Digital, Data & Commercial Contracts Legal Team overall delivers legal advice and solutions for products and channels, data protection, IP, and commercial contracts including third-party suppliers, our Marketplace, and our Starling as a Service offering. In this particular role, you will support several different initiatives focussed on our growing Engine by Starling/ banking as a service offering and in the commercial contracts space. You will have significant exposure to senior stakeholders across the bank.

Your work will include

• Helping to support Starling’s growing banking as a service offering (such as Engine by Starling). This includes drafting and negotiating service (and other) agreements where Starling is the supplier to other sophisticated clients, advising and inputting on tender documents (both for private and public sector clients), and dealing with any other requests for legal support to continue the ongoing success of this area for Starling.
• Drafting and negotiating a full range of commercial agreements (e.g. marketing, IT, technology, outsourcing) to support the development of Engine (and Starling). This includes third-party supplier contracts in a financial services context.
• Managing multiple projects (often to tight deadlines) and supporting colleagues to ensure business and enterprise-wide initiatives are executed promptly and accurately.
• Advising on the issues relevant to the products/ services, contracts, and matters required to run a regulated financial services company and non-regulated technology business.
• Instructing and working with outside counsel where necessary on specialist matters.

Requirements

• You will be a UK-qualified lawyer with 3-6 years PQE (note PQE is a guide only).
• Excellent real-life experience in advising on the legal aspects of SaaS-related technology services.
• Excellent real-life experience in advising on digital (financial services/ banking related) products/services and payments (ideally both in B2B and B2C settings).
• Excellent real-life experience in drafting, advising, and negotiating a range of different third-party supplier commercial contracts in a financial services context.
• You will be capable of working in a fast-paced environment and be keen to grow and develop within the organisation.
• Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills.
• In-house experience would be ideal but is optional for the right candidate.
