Plenium Partners Launches €25M Biomethane Project in Italy
Spanish investment firm Plenium Partners has secured over €25 million from ING Italia to finance its first biomethane plant in Italy. The funding, structured through a bilateral Project Finance agreement, supports a facility in Pavia, Lombardy, set to commence operations in early 2026.
Part of a Broader Biomethane Platform
The plant is part of a larger initiative involving four biomethane facilities across Italy, developed with Aragorn Value Leadership. Each plant will process about 50,000 tonnes of agricultural and livestock waste annually, producing around 500 standard cubic metres of biomethane per hour.
Advanced Technology for Greater Impact
The Pavia facility stands out for its full CO₂ recovery system, allowing it to achieve greater greenhouse gas emission reductions than standard plants. It has already participated in the third biomethane tariff auction organised by GSE, Italy’s renewable energy authority.
Expanding Plenium’s Presence in Italy
Founded in 2007, Plenium Partners has operated in Italy since 2010, managing a portfolio of over 35 photovoltaic projects. Through its Ecualia Capital fund, the company is expanding into biomethane production to diversify its renewable energy investments and support regional development.
ING’s Role in Sustainable Finance
ING Italia’s support reflects its Growing the Difference strategy, aimed at mobilising €150 billion in sustainable financing by 2027 and boosting renewable energy project investments to €7.5 billion annually by 2025.
Biomethane’s Growing Role in Europe’s Energy Transition
Biomethane offers a sustainable alternative by converting organic waste into clean fuel, helping reduce landfill use and environmental pollution.
According to the European Biogas Association, biomethane could meet up to 30–40% of the EU’s gas needs by 2050, while also revitalising rural economies.
